Tennis Elbow: Often Misunderstood

  • We have often thought of tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis as an “inflammatory condition,” as indicated by the title.
  • This is partially wrong. It is actually a tendinopathy; that is, a breakdown of the common extensor tendon as it attaches to the lateral epicondyle.
  • As a result, simple anti-inflammatory or steroid treatments will often not work and can create chronicity, preventing the patient from getting better. A tendinopathy needs a very specific and graduated exercise program that challenges the tendon, carefully allowing it to repair without overloading it.
  • Here is a video showing specific exercises for your patients that can help them with this condition.
  • It is not always easy to get these exercises right. The therapists at Results can help you and your patients get better, faster.
