Modern Pain Science — Implications for Workers' Compensation

Healthcare providers, patients, and workers’ compensation stakeholders deal with the symptom of pain on a daily basis. It is often a symptom that persists beyond tissue healing, and often impacts an injured worker’s ability to return to work. The challenge with pain lies in its subjectivity. The same injury between two different workers doesn’t result in a homogenous pain response. This often creates frustrations from the injured worker and stakeholders. Questions arise: Why is pain so complex? What factors facilitate a timely resolution of pain symptoms? What factors perpetuate pain?
